Brigitte Pierrette Davis was born in Paris, France and grew up in Geneva, Switzerland. Artistic roots run deeply on both sides of her family, in painting, graphic and fiber arts, and even music. Her maternal grandfather was a nationally acclaimed woodcarver in France in the 1930s and 1940s.

As she was growing up, her family encouraged her to draw, paint, and experiment with collage and photography. After pursuing scientific studies both in France and the United States, she came back to art via a Master’s degree in Philosophy and English Literature, and an MFA program in creative writing.

She began carving stone in the fall of 1997 during a nine-week workshop offered by the Art League School in Alexandria, Virginia. Since then, she has studied in workshops in West Palm Beach, Florida, Santa Fe, New Mexico and Marble, Colorado. She finds her inspiration in Nature, during her daily walk with her dog in the woods, and in reading poetry and attending modern dance performances. She counts as her influences the sculptures of Inuit and African artists, of Henry Moore, Jean Arp, Constantin Brancusi, and Isamu Nogushi. She is also grateful to her teachers Foon Sham, Kazutaka Uchida (himself a student of Nogushi), and Lea Topping for helping her develop her sense of beauty.

Brigitte P. Davis was juried in the Torpedo Factory Art Center in Alexandria, Virginia March 2004, and became a permanent member of Studio #7 three months later. She has exhibited in many juried shows and by invitation in galleries in Washington D.C, Baltimore, Tennessee, and Virginia. Her work is found in private collections in the United States and Europe.

Artist Statement

Sculpting stone is a bit like living life. The more open to opportunities and flexible I am, the richer the experience becomes. Each stone’s shape, color, and beauty offer me a wealth of possibilities and guide me from conception to creation.

I prefer to work with alabaster and soapstone because their relative softness allows me to carve with fluid motions and infuse each sculpture with rhythmic vitality.
